How Artificial Light Negatively Impacts Birds

Bird Migration Basics

  • Of the roughly 10,000 species of birds worldwide, around 4,000 of them migrate.

  • Of that 4,000 90% do so at night.

Why Birds Migrate at Night

  • Less predators

    • With most of life going to sleep and/or resting at night, birds can fly without the stress of escape.

  • The stars (more details below)

    • The stars can be used as a map, telling the birds which way is north/south.

    • The stars emanate short wavelengths of light, which enables their ability to sense (and possibly see!) Earth’s magnetic field.

  • Less turbulence

    • As the sun sets, Earth’s surface cools faster than the air around it. As a result, less turbulence; making flight easier and more energy efficient.

  • The moon

    • The moon can be used as a landmark, indicating direction; and its gravitational pull controls the tides — the sound of which are used by shorebirds to find land.

The Stars as a Map

  • Almost all migratory birds have been shown to use the stars as a map. But how?
